G1000 MFD — Multi-Function Display

Build log for the Garmin G1000 MFD replica: bezel, engine page, map display, and X-Plane integration.

4 min read Updated 2026-03

Overview

The Multi-Function Display (MFD) is the right-hand screen of the G1000 suite. It primarily shows the moving map, flight plan, terrain, weather, and engine/systems pages. In the 172SP it is a second Garmin GDU 1040.

The MFD in this build uses an identical monitor and bezel construction to the PFD, but with its own softkey row mapped to the MFD page functions.

Differences from PFD

The MFD bezel is physically identical to the PFD bezel, but the softkey mappings differ — MFD keys control the map range, waypoint selection, and engine page navigation rather than NAV/COM tuning.

The right-side knobs on the MFD control FMS cursor movement and direct-to entry.

Engine Display Page

X-Plane 12 outputs engine data (RPM, manifold pressure, fuel flow, oil temp/pressure, EGT) through the default G1000 engine page on the MFD. No additional Arduino outputs are needed for the engine instruments — they are driven by the simulation directly on-screen.

Status

Identical construction to PFD. Will be built in parallel once the PFD bezel is finalised.
