Sometimes, we need multiple digits for just one component, like the MCP. Because CockpitConnect uses Raspberry Pi's, we want to reduce the number of used pins.
One single digit has 10 pins. The MCP has 23 digits = 230 pins (!). A Raspberry Pi has 40 (not all usable) pins, so in that case you need 6 Raspberry Pi's, just for the digits of the MCP.
To solve this problem, we use the MAX7219CNG LED driver shift register.
